What the silver spot price means

Spot is the price of immediate delivery of one troy ounce (31.1034768 grams) of 99.9% pure silver. It moves all day as the market reacts to the dollar and to industrial demand, since silver is both a precious metal and an industrial input. Because it is quoted per troy ounce of pure metal, you convert to a per-gram figure by dividing by 31.1034768. At the 2026-07-22 snapshot price of $59.91 per troy ounce, that is about $1.93 per gram of pure silver. The board above shows the live number, which will differ.

Silver purity: fine, sterling, coin, and war nickel

Silver items are rarely pure. Purity is written as a decimal fineness: sterling .925 is 92.5% silver, the standard for flatware and jewelry. The table stamps the value of a single gram at each common fineness, using the fixed 2026-07-22 snapshot so the math stays reproducible. Multiply by your item's gram weight for an estimate, or use the live calculator for the current price.

TypeFineness (silver by weight)Value of 1 gram
Fine silver.999 (99.9%)$1.9242
Sterling.925 (92.5%)$1.7817
Coin silver.900 (90.0%)$1.7335
War nickel.350 (35.0%)$0.6742

Snapshot, 2026-07-22, at $59.91 per troy ounce ($1.9262 per gram of pure silver). Live prices above will differ. US 90% "junk silver" coins are coin silver; wartime Jefferson nickels (1942-1945) are 35% silver.

The gold-to-silver ratio explained

The gold-to-silver ratio is simply the gold spot price divided by the silver spot price: it tells you how many ounces of silver it takes to buy one ounce of gold. At the 2026-07-22 snapshot, $4,136.30 gold ÷ $59.91 silver gives a ratio of about 69 to 1. Traders watch it as a gauge of whether silver looks cheap or expensive relative to gold; a high ratio is sometimes read as silver being undervalued, though it is a rough signal, not a forecast. Compute it yourself any time from the two live spot prices on this site.
