What the palladium spot price means
The spot price is the going rate to buy or sell one troy ounce of pure palladium for near-immediate settlement on the global market. It is a benchmark, not a retail quote: bars, coins, and finished pieces trade above spot because of fabrication and dealer margin, while a scrap or refinery buyer pays below spot. The figure above is indicative and can be briefly delayed, so treat it as a reference point rather than a firm offer. A troy ounce is about 31.10 grams, a little heavier than the everyday avoirdupois ounce, which is why the per-gram and per-kilo rows help when you are weighing a specific item.
Where palladium is used
Palladium is prized for its catalytic properties and its bright white finish. In broad terms, the main uses are:
- Catalytic converters: palladium is heavily used in the converters of gasoline-engine vehicles to reduce harmful exhaust emissions.
- Electronics: it appears in multilayer ceramic capacitors and other components that demand reliable conductivity.
- Dentistry: palladium alloys are used in crowns, bridges, and other dental restorations.
- White gold alloys: palladium is one of the metals mixed with gold to produce a naturally white gold.
These are general descriptions of where the metal shows up, not a forecast of demand or price. Because so much palladium goes into vehicle exhaust systems, the metal is closely tied to the automotive world.
950 palladium and jewelry purity
Palladium is also worn on its own as a fine jewelry metal. The common standard is 950 palladium, meaning 95% palladium by mass with the balance made up of alloying metals for strength. Look for a "950" or "Pd950" stamp. As with platinum, the number states the palladium fraction out of 1,000.
| Stamp | Palladium content |
|---|---|
| 950 | 95% |
| 500 | 50% |
Only the metal content carries melt value. A 10-gram 950 palladium ring holds 9.5 grams of pure palladium. Set the purity in the calculator and it applies that fraction to the live price for you.
